Acupuncture Eases Headache Pain

A recent study showed that acupuncture can assist in giving relief to people with persistent headaches. The study suggests that using acupuncture in addition to conventional medication for headaches can aid in giving more relief to these patients.

The study was published in the journal Cephalalgia, and followed more than 15,000 adult patients with chronic headaches.  Patients presented with:

  • either migraine or tension headaches and
  • suffered from at least two headaches per month for at least one year

Approximately 3,200 of these were randomly assigned to have acupuncture added to their current treatment or to stay on their current treatment alone.  The rest of the patients began acupuncture treatment alone.  Fifteen acupuncture treatments were given over three months and everyone was re-evaluated after six months.

The study discovered that the acupuncture patients showed a remarkable improvement in their pain symptoms.  Their average number of headache days dropped from 8.4 to 4.7 by the end of the study.  The patients that took medications remained almost the same with little change from 8.1 to 7.5 days by the end of the study.

Clearly, acupuncture is a wonderful treatment available for headaches.  If you experience chronic headaches make your appointment today to begin living life with less pain!
